Product Overview 

Applied Acoustic Engineering (AAE) manufactures a specialized range of streamer hydrophones designed to act as the "ears" for sub-bottom profiling systems. These streamers receive the acoustic energy reflected from seafloor layers—generated by a Boomer or Sparker—and convert it into high-fidelity electrical signals for a data acquisition system.

Available in various configurations, from single-element units for shallow-water "pinger" work to multi-element arrays for deep-penetration UHR (Ultra-High Resolution) surveys, AAE hydrophones are known for their rugged polyurethane tubing, silicon oil filling for neutral buoyancy, and integrated low-noise pre-amplifiers.

Key Product Configurations

AAE offers two primary frequency classes to match the sound source being used:

  1. Medium Frequency (MF) Streamers: Optimized for Boomer and High-Frequency Sparker surveys. These arrays focus on high vertical resolution in the upper sediment layers.
  2. Low Frequency (LF) Streamers: Designed for Deep-Penetration Sparker work (like the Delta Sparker). These use acceleration-cancelling elements to maintain a high signal-to-noise ratio at lower frequencies.

  • Integrated Pre-Amplifiers: Every streamer includes a high-gain, low-noise pre-amp (standard 9V battery powered or 24V DC for LF models) to ensure signal integrity over the long tow cable.
  • Neutral Buoyancy: Filled with polydimethylsiloxane (silicon oil), allowing the streamer to "fly" straight and at a consistent depth, which is critical for preventing "ghost" reflections in the data.
  • Robust Tow Leader: Supplied with a 50m tow leader as standard, featuring high-tensile strength members to protect the internal signal conductors from towing stress.
  • Acceleration Cancelling (LF Models): The 24-element LF streamer uses specialized elements to cancel out "tow noise" and vibrations, essential when trying to image deep reflectors with low-frequency energy.
